Linsanity Is Just a Continuation of Tebowing And May Be Creating A New Breed Of Professional Athlete

He’s emotional.

He’s inspirational.

He’s gone against the grain of the league and captured the imagination of the fans.

Jeremy Lin is not just Linsational, he’s not just spawned Linsanity, he’s the NBA’s version of Tim Tebow.

Linsanity is a continuation of Tebowing.

Though they play in different leagues, Lin and Tebow are really identical. The only difference is that Tebow has been scrutinized from the top of his hair down to his toenails and nobody knew Lin before he exploded onto the scene.

But they both rose from the bottom of the rosters to be instant superstars. Fans love them because they have brought energy to lethargic teams with passionate fan bases, because they both approach each game as if it’s their last one, because they are not “me-me” athletes who seem to care more about themselves than the team.

They have each energized an entire league.

And, more than any coach could ever hope to do, they have inspired their teammates to elevate their games. They have each, as Tebow said on many occasions, gotten their teammates to “believe.”

Lin and Tebow each play the game with a college-style emotion and go out and give it the ‘ol college try on each and every play. They don’t beat their own chest, they pump their fists to fans and pat the backs of their teammates. Heck, they involve their teammates in their heroics. They just do what they do, and fans love it.

These are all lost arts in professional sports these days. Too many pro athletes are concerned about their image, their egos, their Twitter followers and their contracts (okay, nothing new on that last one). What they do not appear to be concerned about is their fans and, sometimes, even winning.

No athlete likes to lose, but with so many games in pro sports, it becomes part of the routine. A shrug of the shoulders. We’ll get another team the next night.

Well that doesn’t sit with Lin and Tebow. They fight to the finish. They care about every play, every possession. You can see it in their eyes, in their emotion. And they are leaving their high-priced, high-Twittering counterparts in the dust.

To fans, this is what has been missing from their teams. A passion from the players on par with their passion for the team.

Lin and Tebow could well be setting a trend for a new breed of professional athlete.

Perhaps there’s another Lin or Tebow out there somewhere in another sport. And you know what – baseball, you’re next!
